The 5 Keys To Staying Young We have more aging adults alive today than at any other time in history. This is no small feat. With advances in medicine, better access to resources, and improvement in our general quality of life, living well into our 80s and beyond is a realistic expectation to hold. That being said, there is a general understanding that getting older means developing health complications. Osteoporosis, arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, cognitive decline, hearing loss and decreased stamina are often associated with aging. The question that remains is, is this physical decline inevitable? The answer is not necessarily. When it comes to healthy aging, lifestyle plays a role and although we may not be able to change genetics or random chance, a preventive lifestyle can make a big difference. 1 - Lower Your Stress High levels of stress over prolonged periods of time is dangerous at any age, but can be more difficult to recover from as we get older. When we experience stress, the hormone cortisol is released into our system. For instances of short-term stress, this is a good thing, cortisol acts as an internal alarm system and is crucial for keeping us safe. Once the stressful situation has passed, our cortisol level should drop in accordance with our heart rate. How Stress Makes You Feel Older Long-term stress often keeps our internal alarm system activated. This wreaks havoc on the body affecting our sleep and recovery time, our energy levels, our mental and emotional acuity. Prolonged stress can lead to:

2 - Manage Your Insulin Insulin may not be something you discuss with your family doctor if you don’t have a diabetes diagnosis, but research tells us that maintaining stable insulin levels is a key to longevity. Meanwhile, insulin resistance due to chronically high insulin has been shown to predict and accelerate the development of age-related diseases including hypertension, coronary heart disease, dementia, stroke, cancer, and type 2 diabetes. Ditch Refined Carbohydrates When we eat a steady diet of refined carbohydrates and quickly absorbed sugars, our cells slowly become more insulin resistant, requiring more insulin to maintain healthy blood sugar levels. The higher our insulin levels stay, the more resistant our cells become, eventually leading to what is often called metabolic syndrome: A collection of symptoms including fatigue, excess fat around the midsection, increased blood pressure, elevated fasting blood sugar and increased inflammation throughout the body. Insulin Testing Insulin levels go up long before they develop into issues such as hypoglycemia and prediabetes, and early detection can help change the course of what happens next. Often, we are unaware that our insulin levels have increased and are nearing dangerous levels. Lab testing to determine your levels is important in understanding where you stand now as well as having a measurement to assess your progress. Lifestyle Changes The actions needed to prevent and reduce insulin resistance in the early stages are fairly simple: reduce your consumption of refined carbohydrates, eat protein at every meal, and stay active. 4 - Keep Inflammation at BayInflammation is the body’s way of protecting itself. Physical injuries trigger the release of proteins, antibodies and increased blood flow to the area to repair the damage. What many people are not aware of is that long-term exposure to irritants and toxins, food sensitivities, autoimmune disorders and even stress can cause an inflammatory response too. When this response continues for more than a few days, it’s considered chronic. How Chronic Inflammation Ages YouChronic inflammation is a major component of accelerated aging and a risk factor for developing atherosclerosis, hypertension, diabetes, strokes, heart attacks, fibromyalgia, arthritis, sinus infections, autoimmune conditions and cancer. Testing for InflammationYour doctor can run a number of tests to check for inflammatory signals in your blood including the ESR blood test (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) or a CRP blood test (C-reactive protein). 5 - Keep MovingAnd finally, regular physical activity is crucial to aging well. As we get older we start to lose bone density and muscle mass which impacts not only our physical strength, but more importantly our stability, bone strength and immune system. Keeping active and flexible throughout all stages of life allows us to stay healthy and remain independent in our later years. Choose Activities that Suit YouRegular activity doesn’t have to mean team sports (although there is no harm in that.) Find a form of exercise that suits your lifestyle and level of fitness, and stick to it: Taking a walk, a Yoga or Pilates practice, swimming or cycling are all great lifelong habits. Make sure to include an element of weight resistance which helps strengthen your bones and joints as well as improving heart health. As this Mother’s Day weekend approaches I am reminded of mothers, college graduations and good health. I am reminded that I chose to study Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Florida- College of Health Related Professions and have been in my field of Nutrition and Health for 39 years- never skipping a year, a day or a beat. Did you know that to be a Licensed Dietitian you must keep up your continuing education continuously to do the work you love? Well I do – and I do know my Nutrition. So this week I was sitting with another beautiful client straightening out myths. She was having anxiety over eating fat. Does fat make you fat? Absolutely not! Do carbs make you fat? Not if you eat them correctly. Does protein make you have muscle? Not the way I see it. You have to work for that- but you CAN maintain it's integrity through GOOD NUTRITION. There are so many fallacies in the world of Nutrition- somehow we are sold a lot of information in order to promote someone else’s sales and push products. Let’s look at some amazing things that can happen on the inside. Here’s what losing 10% of your body weight could do for your body! Your blood vessels supply the heart with the blood it needs to pump optimally. A 10% loss reduces your heart’s workload. By losing weight, you are reducing the fat that can form plaque and clog your coronary arteries. Clogged arteries can cause a heart attack. Lower that risk by lowering your weight. Your weight and your blood pressure have a connection. If you are at a healthy weight you are more likely to maintain a healthy blood pressure. With a 10% weight loss, you may be able to reduce or possibly eliminate your blood pressure medications. By lowering your body weight by 10%, you lower your risk of developing diabetes by 58 percent. Research has also shown that 10% weight-loss can decrease your A1C by half a point on average. That is very close to the effect that some anti-diabetic pills can have on blood sugar. A 10% weight-loss can also improve sleep apnea, or even make the use of a CPAP machine unnecessary. Blood fats, or blood lipids, in your bloodstream can also change with weight loss. Your triglycerides goes down, your LDL (the bad kind) cholesterol goes down, and your HDL (the good kind) cholesterol goes up. A 10% weight-loss can result in a five point increase in HDL cholesterol. Getting and staying at a healthy weight and lowering your blood pressure usually means fewer blood clots that can break away and cause havoc with your brain, heart and/or lungs. A 10% loss can decrease the levels of inflammatory substances circulating in your blood thereby reducing the risk of vascular damage. There are so many sayings about point of view, which side of the bed you get out on and more. I could share the story of how I ended up in Sunflower Park yesterday sharing a sandwich with my dogs and being pulled towards squirrels and such, or I could share that I found myself in a park with my favorite flower as it's name. Everything is in your point of view. So I invite you this Monday to see if you can adjust your eyes to what you choose to see today. Do you see that you have a cold with a runny nose? Or do you see that you have soup and tea to drink in your favorite mug with amazing white blood cells that cheer you on in great support? It's all in your Point of View. Be sure I am not PollyAnna, but finding the good or better in each open opportunity brings you into greater harmony and less separation from being loved. You are always loved.
